The Turks and Caicos Islands are an excellent destination for English speaking travelers. Temperatures in this island chain average between 64 and 91 °F (18 and 33 °C) year round. The weather is likewise sunny and dry most of the time. Although travelers should exercise caution when coming during hurricane season, these islands are otherwise a great spot for various water related activities. Humpback whales have been known to make their homes in these waters and the islands have been unofficially recognized as a hotspot for biodiversity, but they have yet to receive the UNESCO stamp of approval. Providenciales Island, also known locally as Provo, is an especially good place for travelers to use as a base because it is the main hub for much that goes on in this British territory. Here are some of our top things to do in Providenciales Island, Turks and Caicos.
The best way to see the islands in this archipelago is by boat and taking a charter ride through them with this company is a great way to do just that. Half day tours with this organization encompass snorkeling in a pristine marine environment and spending time on an isolated beach. Sunset cruises are also available. Cold beverages such as rum punch are provided for those coming on these excursions and snacks may be included on some trips. The knowledgeable staff can point out interesting island spots and recommend great places to stop for a bite to eat afterwards. This company can also arrange for couples to renew their wedding vows. Despite the fact that some travelers might consider these excursions to be a bit pricey, the experience is well worth the money spent.
Grace Bay & Bight Reef
This beach has long been considered one of the best in the world and this year the bay received a Traveler’ Choice Award from Trip Advisor. Visitors come for the postcard images that are brought to life by the pristine blue waters and powdery white sand. However, there are also plenty of restaurants in the vicinity and travelers won’t go hungry. Those coming to this beach should bring their snorkeling gear along so that they can also pay a visit to Bight Reef. Located directly out from the Coral Gardens Resort and running for about a 1/4th a mile, this reef is home to a wide variety of marine life including various types of coral, fish, and turtles.
The company offers two daily horseback rides around the island and the groups are limited to 12 people so that travelers get the attention they need. In fact, the staff here will even pick up guests from their hotel. Upon arrival, participants are given some tips for managing the horses they were matched with based on their skill levels. Rides do not take place in a follow-the-leader fashion and the highlight of this tour is riding the horses through the waves on the nearby beach. Guides at Provo Ponies are also quite willing to take pictures of those participating and waterproof pouches are provided for any electronic gear that travelers don’t feel comfortable leaving at their hotel. Those who plan on coming here should note that children younger than 6 are not allowed to ride unless they have previous experience and persons weighing over 200 pounds are unable to be accommodated. However, experienced and amateur riders are both looked after at this location.
This beach is located near Chalk Sound and it is a little bit harder to find than Grace Bay but the result is that it is less crowded. One should either rent a car and drive out or take a taxi. The road is marked “private” but guests can come and go as they please. Visitors who are driving should park in the field near the tennis courts and walk down to the shore. This area is good for kids because the ocean remains shallow for a long distance from the shoreline. However, those coming here will need to bring their own supplies because there are no food or drink stands at this beach area.
Chalk Sound National Park
This location has wonderful cliff top views and gorgeous turquoise waters. The best way to get to the park is by rental car because the area is more of a scenic drive than a beach trip. With that in mind, a good place to stop for a break on the way is at the Las Brisas overlook. It’s also a great place for a picnic but travelers will need to bring their own snacks and beverages. There is also a beach at Taylor Bay if one gets tired of driving and needs a break.
Where to Sleep
One of the most important parts of any vacation is where you are going to lay your head at the end of a day full of activities. The choice is pretty simple when it comes to Turks & Caicos. Windhaven Beach Villas is located on the Long Bay side of the island, only 5 minutes drive from the popular Grace Bay. However, unlike Grace Bay, Long Bay is not over run with tourists. It’s a peaceful area of the island with gorgeous beaches, which you will probably have to yourself. The property is stunning, and sits right on the beach. This is the perfect place to stay whether you are a family, single or looking for a romantic getaway. You wont get better than Windhaven Beach Villas.
